César Martins
Erosão
2024
César Martins was born in Barcelos, Portugal, and lives in Berlin. In his artistic practice, he works mainly with analog photography and is particularly interested in the mystery of things that cannot be fully grasped on a first encounter. Between 2017 and 2023, the artist revisited the ever-narrowing line between land and water on Portugal’s Atlantic coast, where he was raised, to work on the Erosão project.
With the understanding that things might not remain the same after each return, he discovered and collected new details at each stop: sand where there were houses, rock where there was sand. There are said to be stretches of coastline where the drop has reached almost 43 meters. The greatest erosion, however, takes place inside. And that's what Erosão is about: an attempt to grasp what has remained, a way of showing what is disappearing.
