Book presentation
On the 26th of November, from 7pm, Emília Tavares will be presenting the book "Posto de Trabalho" [Work Station] by portuguese photographer Valter Vinagre.
"The photographs that I present in the series "Posto de Trabalho" [Work Station] don't show people, but it is of people that they speak. We have here ephemeral constructions and spaces that shelter and hide underground labour activity.
These images focus upon a form of prostitution, the one that is perhaps the hardest, most dangerous and least dignified for both the workers and their clients. Any discussion of roadside prostitution necessarily implies a reflection on the public/private because it is practised far from the gaze of prying eyes, in the seclusion of the forest inside improvised shacks. This series was photographed in Portugal between 2010 and 2013." (Valter Vinagre)
Valter Vinagre
Born in Avelãs de Caminho (Anadia, Portugal) and studied photography at AR.CO (Centre for Art and Visual Communication, Lisbon) between 1986 and 1989. He began his career as a photographer at the end of the 1980's, with individual exhibitions and various group initiatives.
Although his work was initially considered to be documental in character, it later developed a more reflective dimension, creating discourses about the meanings associated with landscape, city and travel.

Emília Tavares
Is a senior curator at the National Museum of Contemporary Art- Museu do Chiado, Lisbon, researcher and art critic.
MA in Art History (Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at New University of Lisbon).
Principal domains of research, History of Portuguese Photography, Photography and is Social and Politics domains.
Co-coordinator of the project OBJECTIVA – ONLINE DATABASE FOR PORTUGUESE PHOTOGRAPHY, and the portuguese invited researcher to the European project FOTOFO - The History of 20th Century European Photography .
She has regularly published her texts in newspapers, magazines and catalogues, and is author of many lectures in public art and educational institutions.
