Ilha finally opens its gates to the public on the 9th of June, with a photography exhibition by Tomé Duarte and concert by Garcia da Selva.
Join our party and celebration and get to know this new 3 floors space totally dedicated to the visual arts, with a special care for photography and independent book publishing.
There will be photography, music, books, food, drinks and amazing people.

"Prefiro uma ferida do que uma borbulha"
Our invitation to Tomé Duarte is not totally innocent. The first exhibition at Ilha serves as our curatorial statement. We have no pretensions, we do not follow any stream, we have no obligations and we believe in an independent atitude. The work and personality of Tomé Duarte denotes just that. By embodying a very particular anti-system atitude, his prints exhale the horror of norms and conventions, something that is typified by his signature style, a low-fi technique based on a succession of scans of prints.

Concert: Garcia da Selva
"Garcia da Selva é uma das agências de Manuel Mesquita, artista multifacetado e dotado de uma inesgotável força anímica. Com da Selva, Mesquita articula os elementos contraditórios da nossa situação (tão singular como paradoxal) de pré-urbanidade pós-colonial com os símbolos de uma pop cosmopolita, universal e recursiva. Entre o dândi e o estroina, Garcia destaca-se pela imagem dúplice que deve a influências tão distantes como o hipster, cosmopolita elegante, e o coronel sertanejo, troglodita grosseiro. Ecléctico, pois claro, Garcia da Selva oferece-nos uma música nefelibata cheia de matizes telúricos: os pés podem não estar assentes na terra mas as mãos não se furtam à lama.[...]"
